Out with the Old and In with the New

Have you ever noticed how a phrase or theme can form a message for you and often you do not notice it until afterwards?

This past week has thrown numerous examples at me of the questionable validity of the opening line, ‘Out with he Old and In with the New’.

As with all things it will fall into the one word Suitability. Is something still suitable. Before I completely lose you let me explain myself and see if you can follow along with me.

It all started when I was looking at a photo. I saw someone is a very pale, full length gown at a wedding. It took me back to my own wedding and the surprise/disappointment I felt to see a couple of women wearing colours and outfits reminiscent of a bridal dress, especially when it was a day wedding. Obviously this is not something that I have forgotten for this one picture to take me back there so readily.  I know I can be considered old fashioned and as I sat there looking at this photo I was wondering, should I say something, shouldn’t I? Is it OK today? Have the times changed? It is worth saying anything? Around and around the questions flew and I settled with the comment. That was a gutsy decision to wear floor length cream to a wedding.

Times are changing, I just have to think about what I started out with in my corporate dressing presentations 9 years ago to what I say today and there have been adjustments made to our grooming standards. Ties are now optional, hosiery for women is now considered passe and multi tasking by reading blackberries etc is standard in many meetings and presentations.

I was prepared to chalk this image to one of these new changes until a old client contacted me this week. He has booked me to come and speak to his office at their retreat based on the presentations I used to give when I worked with him last about 7 years ago. He felt his staff were getting too casual. He even felt that he too was slipping down to the lowest common denominator of appearance and was even bought to task by one of his own staff. The comment was made, ‘If you stop wearing a tie, what is the next thing you will change, a polo shirt for your business shirt?”

Should it be out with the old and in with the new. Absolutely, as long as it does not compromise your professionalism, your personal standards and any situation that you find yourself in.

As easy as it is to put ourselves first, always consider what effect your actions will have on those around you. Is it time to stand out, time to blend in, time to toe the line or time to make a stand. Is it time to honour traditions or to pave a fresh path?

Shoes too tight
This advice was found in this months issue of Shop Till You Drop. - If you need to stretch a pair of plain leather or patent leather fill a resealable plastic bag with water until it fills the space your foot will take in your shoes.

Place the shoes and bag into your freezer until the water has frozen. Frozen water takes up more space than liquid so it will gently stretch your shoe as it freezes.

Once frozen take your shoe out of the freezer and allow it to thaw before removing the bag from your shoes. If it has not stretched enough, repeat the process.

Out with the Old and In with the New Sale.

This Saturday, July 2nd 2011 I will be selling off all of my old make-up, my stock of handbag organisers, cufflinks and ties. July heralds the arrival of my Maxfield cosmetics line and it is time to clear the decks before the website is up and the range is running. My old samples will be thrown at at $1-$2 or there abouts.

The sale will be at 124 Jasper Rd., Bentleigh, from 1-4pm.

The new range will also be on display for you to look at and play with. Be one of the first to experience this fresh approach to make-up.

If you can’t make it on Saturday and really want to see the make-up, give me a call, I can bring it by. You can grab some girlfriends and host a make-up made easy party, I can simply come by and show you and some friends or book me for a make-up.

Last month I attended the Association of Image Consultants International conference in Orlando Florida. It was my final year on the international board and I had a ball.

I managed to sneak away to Disney World and to Universal Studios. I marveled at the pure joy that is ‘It’s a Small World’ and was too scared to even scream on the Harry Potter ride. 4D has a lot going for it but if your stomach is the slightest bit squeamish do not go on any ride where they give you a free locker for your goods.

This is where the Old and the New collided in harmony.

Mind you I do think It’s a Small World has had a face lift.

Have a great day.

Cheers
Clare
